How to Size Kids Boots And Shoes

Children's feet tend to grow quickly, so finding an adult-sized boot or shoe too large is much more likely than finding one that’s too small.

 It's important not only that they're a good fit in width, but also length and circumference. These measurements are typically found on the back of the boot or shoe in centimeters (cm) or inches.

It's always a good idea to have your child stand directly on a piece of paper for the measuring to ensure accuracy.

 Remember, younger children are usually able to get by with slightly larger-sized shoes than older children (depending upon the activity), so be sure and buy the correct size.

Here are some tips when sizing up kids boots and shoes.

Foot Length: The length of the shoe should extend at least 1" past the tips of your child's toes when standing, but no more than 1-1/2" over his heel. If you can grasp more than 1" behind his longest toe, the shoe is too long or wide. If you can’t grasp any excess space behind his heel, or if he can’t tie the shoe, it’s too small.

Ankle Circumference: The best way to measure your child’s ankle is with a flexible tape measure at the narrowest part of the ankle

It's important that this measurement be taken quickly before your child moves his foot around because ankles tend to swell after prolonged standing. If your child has a very high or low instep, this measurement may not be accurate.

Boot Height: The height of a boot is measured from top to bottom and not the insole. When measuring the boot, if you can bend the sole inward more than 1/2" it's too small. When buying a taller boot for your child, it’s important to choose one that fits high on his ankle and is not too tight in front.

Boot Width: The widest section of the boot should be no wider than 1/2" from your child's heel to his longest toe when standing.

 If your child can’t place his foot flat on a piece of paper while wearing the shoe, it may be too narrow. If you can fit more than 3 fingers inside the widest section of the boot, it's too wide.

Heel Height: Heel height is measured from the top of the boot to the back along your child’s heel.

Be sure to start your measurement with a flat foot and not to include extra space from folds or wrinkles in the leather. Here's how to measure heel height: Place a piece of paper on a hard surface,

 put your child's foot on the paper, and trace around his heel. Transfer this measurement to another piece of paper, then measure that piece against a ruler.
